Important Announcement: New Route for the 2025 Miway Wally Hayward Marathon
Dear Runners,
As the countdown to the 48th MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon begins, we want to share some important background about this year’s newly certified and approved route — and what it took to get here.
As most of you know, organizing a marathon is no small feat, especially one as beloved and significant as the Wally. What many might not realize is the complex behind-the-scenes process that keeps road running events on track year after year — particularly when unexpected challenges arise.
Lyttleton Manor, Kloofsig, and other areas in Centurion have been increasingly affected by recurring sinkholes in recent years, posing significant challenges to route planning and public safety. Our thoughts are also with the residents who have been impacted — some have lost much more than just convenience.
In December 2024, a new sinkhole developed in Clifton Avenue, forcing an early route revision. Other areas, including Amkor Avenue, Jade Street, and Van Riebeeck Street, were also flagged for concern. Then, in March 2025, yet another sinkhole was reported — this time in DF Malan Avenue, directly affecting our existing route.
At that point, we had a difficult decision to make: postpone or cancel the event, or completely reimagine the route — late in the game and under immense pressure.
What followed were sleepless nights, urgent meetings, and countless hours of planning. Our team — all passionate runners ourselves — met repeatedly, consulted the official course measurer, and engaged with key stakeholders. We worked closely with the Tshwane Metro Police Department and emergency services to ensure any new route would meet the highest standards of safety and logistical feasibility.
We did not take this lightly. The result is a completely reworked, fully measured, officially certified and importantly – a risk-mitigated route — one that is not only safer, but also allows the Wally tradition to continue uninterrupted for its 48th consecutive year.
We’ve heard the early feedback: yes, this new route features a bit more elevation than in previous years. That said, we intentionally front-loaded the majority of the climbing into the first half, and shaped the final kilometres to be more runnable — especially when you need it most.
We truly believe this route will enhance your preparation, particularly for those of you training for Comrades. While the new route brings a bit more of a challenge, it’s been designed to support your preparation and still provide the warmth, spirit, and organization that runners have come to love about the Wally.
To the thousands of runners joining us — from all nine provinces and abroad — we can’t wait to welcome you. Thank you for your understanding, your patience, and your trust.
The Wally is your race, and we’ve done everything possible to ensure that, even with the unexpected, it remains a highlight of your running year.
With gratitude,
The MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon Organizing Team
